AGREST 10th Scientific Conference and AGM held on 15 – 16 March 2018


“Changing Role of Government, Industrialization and Markets in Tanzania: Back to Planned Economy?”

AGREST is an association set up for furthering development and application of systematic knowledge of agricultural economics and agribusiness in Tanzania. It is a registered entity since 1999 with registration number SO. 9877. One of the primary goals of AGREST is to facilitate scientific research and provide a common forum for academician and practitioners to disseminate knowledge and information in agricultural economics through, among other things, meetings and publication on annual basis. Since its inception AGREST has successful held 9 annual conferences on various themes of interest to the development of Tanzania’s economy.

The last AGREST scientific conference was held on 6-8 October 2008 (about 10 years ago). The School of Agricultural Economics and Business Studies (SAEBS) saw the need of reviving this great association. The 10th annual conference was held on 15-16 March 2018 at St Gaspar conference Centre in Dodoma with the theme “Changing Role of Government, Industrialization and Markets in Tanzania: Back to Planned Economy?”. This theme gave participants an opportunity to discuss conceptual and practical issues pertinent to agricultural development.

The conference was officiated by Honourable Dr Florens Turuka, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence and National Service of United Republic Government of Tanzania. This year’s conference brought participants drawn from different field related to the agricultural sector from Tanzania. About 24 scientific papers including 1 keynote papers from experienced experts were presented.

The conference followed by AGREST Annual General Meeting during which new leaders were selected to lead the association for 3 years starting from 16th March 2018. Dr. Elibariki Msuya was Selected to be a Chairperson of the association, others were Ms. Anneth Goodluck (Vice Chairperson) Dr. Felix Nandonde (Secretary) and Dr. Daniel Ndyetabula (Treasurer) “Congratulation to them and goodluck”
