Dr. Joseph Hella

hella 150x150Dr. Joseph Hella is Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Tanzania. He obtained a PhD from Gent University - Belgium in 2002. Other previous training include Diploma (Farm Management), BSc (Rural Economy) and MSc (Agriculture Economics – Marketing). From 1994 to date, Joseph is working at SUA as a trainers, consultant and researcher in areas related to agriculture economics with interest in farm management, project planning & evaluation, policy analysis, natural resource economics, climate change & environmental issues.

At SUA he teaches; project planning and evaluation, farm management economics and social research methods. Other posts before joining SUA include: Agriculture tutor at MATI Tumbi (1982-1984), Estate - Farm Manager at TANWAT Njombe (1988-1992), Deputy project manager with Tanzania Nutfields (1992-1993) and Senior tutor at the Institute of Rural Development Planning Dodoma (1993-1994).

On environmental cycles, he graduated as a LEAD (Leadership for Environment and Development) fellow in 1998. In 2010 he was nominated as a Lead Author for Chapter 10 (Economic Sectors) in the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). He has published extensively in areas of macro economic reforms (including globalisation) and smallholder agricultural, farmers’ production strategies and in semi-arid environment, seed systems, smallholder agricultural systems, economics of soil conservation, agricultural policies, climate change and food security. Joseph enjoys natural environments, nature, cultural tourism and traveling.
