Welcome Note

The Food and Resource Economics department (DeFRE) is a newly established department under the School of Agricultural Economics and Business studies dedicated to provide knowledge in food economics, natural resource and environmental economics. The department sought to integrate research, outreach/extension, consultancy and teaching philosophy of the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) to produce graduates with successful career in addressing the worldwide increasingly demand for food and threats to its natural resources.

The DeFRE has a total of 13 faculty members who are fully involved in research, outreach and teaching in areas of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Marketing, Food Safety standards, Value Chains, International trade, Risk Management, Rural development, Natural Resource, Environmental Life Assessment, Environmental Economics and Agribusiness Management. The department is located at the University with access to additional experts on, among others, Forest Economics, Food Science, Horticulture, Animal science, Forest Resource Management.
